Core Tip: The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that consumers should not eat shellfish from South Korea and has asked retailers to stop selling it, as the products may carry the norovirus.
This move comes after an analysis by the agency found that the shellfish growing areas had high water pollution levels. Shellfish from South Korea was also linked to norovirus outbreaks in the US.

The FDA has removed firms that transport Korean shellfish from its list of approved shippers. It noted that an extensive recall of the product may be launched, which may include fresh, frozen or processed oysters, clams, mussels and scallops.

The agency has alerted the state authorities, asking them to implement any action which they consider appropriate to deal with this announcement.

However, this alert does not affect Korean crab or shrimp or any shellfish which is grown and produced domestically.

Norovirus, which is not typically life-threatening, can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and stomach cramping.
