Core Tip: Qatar is planning to set up a national food safety agency, which will be responsible for monitoring food safety, including plants and animal safety, in the country.
Currently, food safety regulation in Qatar is implemented by agencies in different government ministries including the Supreme Council of Health, Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning.

The Qatar National Food Safety Programme (QNFSP) will be the master planner of the agency. The organisation has initiated the process of setting up the agency, which is currently in the design phase. Currently, QNFSP is looking at whole policies regarding food safety, reported Gulf-times.com.

QNFSP senior regulatory affairs adviser Godwin Balasingam said that a single national agency for food control is the accepted internationally.

If there are too many agencies doing it and there is no proper collaboration between them, a food safety risk can occur, Balasingam added.

In addition, Qatar also plans to establish a national risk assessment team, which would conduct surveys and also look into food safety issues, such as food contamination and food analysis.
