May nonfat dry milk production up 31% from 2011

Core Tip: May production of edible nonfat dry milk was 195,490,000 lbs, up 2% from April and up 31% from May 2011, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Dairy Products report.
Manufacturers’ stocks of edible nonfat dry milk were 215,346,000 lbs, down 5% from April but up 32% from May 2011. May nonfat dry milk shipments were 198,201,000 lbs, up 16% from April and up 55% from May 2011.

Output of skim milk powders was 13,321,000 lbs, down 24% from April and down 63% from May 2011.

Total dry whey production was 86,302,000 lbs, up slightly from 85,990,000 lbs in April but down 6% from May 2011. Production of lactose was 87,373,000 lbs, up slightly from 87,231,000 lbs in April and up from 87,301,000 lbs in May 2011. Whey protein concentrate production totaled 36,743,000 lbs, down 1% from April but up slightly from 36,669,000 lbs in May 2011.

Dry buttermilk outturn was 8,688,000 lbs, down 8% from April but up 5% from May 2011.

Total manufacturers’ stocks of dry whey on May 31, 2012, were 49,627,000 lbs, down 2% from April and down 3% from May 2011. Total lactose stocks were 80,977,000 lbs, up 2% from April and up 9% from May 2011. Whey protein concentrate stocks totaled 50,026,000 lbs, up 6% from April and up 59% from May 2011. Dry buttermilk stocks totaled 19,206,000 lbs, down 18% from April but up 7% from May 2011.

Butter production in May 2012 was 163,282,000 lbs, down 4% from April but up 5% from May 2011.

Total cheese production was 915,783,000 lbs, up 1% from April and up slightly from 912,486,000 lbs in May 2011.

Production of regular hard ice cream totaled 76,277,000 lbs, up 10% from April and up 6% from May 2011. Low-fat ice cream production was 41,781,000 lbs, up 3% from April but down slightly from 41,914,000 lbs in May 2011.
