This was informed to FnB News in a chat over telephone by S V S S Velshankar, joint secretary, TFMA. A request in this regard was made to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) by TFMA.
Velshankar added that the law had been brought with the sole objective of ensuring availability of safe and quality food to all the people in the country. Hence, the TFMA, in a letter sent to Dr Manmohan Singh, the prime minister, and Dr K Chandramouli, chairperson, FSSAI, made a request to remove the loopholes in the law and implement it.
TFMA particularly pointed out to the prime minister that the law relating to packing and labelling, and the punishments that have been talked about were similar to the preceding law - PFA Act, 1954, and also resembled a food regulation in England.
The TFMA added that quality was being rendered sub-standard because of changes in soil conditions, climatic conditions, fertilisers and pesticides and so on. Hence, the standard on food commodities also needed to be modified.
The body said that it did not receive any kind of response from FSSAI.
