Morrisons reports rise in sprout sales

Core Tip: UK-based supermarket chain Morrisons has reported a 70% increase in the sale of sprouts over the past three months, compared to the same period in 2011.
The company has attributed the increase to the willingness of consumers to introduce sprouts to other dishes - especially salads.

Morrisons also reported an increase in the sales of other vegetables - baking potatoes increased by 32% during the same period, while swede rose by 15%.

Morrisons Director of Produce and Horticulture Andrew Garton said while most people tend to associate sprouts with Christmas, it has been noticed that consumers are increasingly introducing them to other dishes throughout the year.

"The poor weather this summer has also played a part in the increase because people want some hearty, comforting vegetables to turn to that we would traditionally see proving popular during the winter months," Garton added.
