Core Tip: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration this week announced recalls of various products made with mangoes that are the suspected source of the Salmonella Braenderup bacteria currently causing a nationwide outbreak.
Washington State-based Spokane Produce, Inc. voluntarily recalled a lot of its pineapple/mango pico de gallo Wednesday. On Thursday, World Foods, LLC issued a voluntary recall of fruit salsas and cut fruit variety packs. Products subject to these recalls were made with Daniella brand mangoes imported from Mexico by Splendid Products of Burlingame, California, which are thought to be the vehicle of the Salmonella outbreak that has sickened 105 people in 16 states to date.

Products subject to recall include the following:

From Spokane Produce

A total of 128 plastic containers of Pineapple/Mango Pico de Gallo made by Spokane Produce, Inc. are being recalled. Packages are 16 oz. in size and are marked with UPCode 8869483987. The items are sold under the brand names of Garden Patch or Yoke's. Product is market with a use-by date of 9/10/12 or earlier.

The recalled pico de gallos were distributed to 11 inland northwest supermarkets in Washington, Idaho and Montana.

Consumers who purchased the recalled product are urged not to eat it and to discard it or return it to its place of purchase for a full refund. Those with questions can call the company at 509-710-8301.

These two recalls are the first of products made with Daniella mangoes to be announced by FDA. The agency has also published two recalls of whole mangoes, one by Splendid and one by Giant Foods, which bought whole mangoes from Splendid and sold them at retail locations. At least 12 other U.S. companies who bought Daniella mangoes for retail sale have issued their own recalls of the mangoes, but FDA has not posted these recalls on its website. An additional 8 retailers are known to have purchased Daniella mangoes, but have not yet issued recalls of the fruits.
