Mondelēz International, an American multinational confectionery, food and beverage conglomerate, plans to invest a minimum of $200m to empower one million coffee farming entrepreneurs by 2020 under its Coffee Made Happy program.
Coffee Made Happy program is designed to make Mondelez's full supply chain more transparent and sustainable, from bean to cup.
With this initiative, Mondelez aims to increase farmer productivity and the viability of small-scale coffee farming, strengthen agricultural practices and build sustainable coffee communities.
The company also plans to deploy new manufacturing technologies, recycle shipping materials, select more sustainable transport materials and forge new collaborations to improve existing commercial skills development programs in Vietnam, Peru and other important coffee markets.
Global Coffee president Hubert Weber said: "This is the right thing to do for farmers, for the environment, and for our business. Together, we can help make coffee farming an attractive profession for generations to come."
The latest move is in line with the company's previous commitment to sustainably source 100% of its European coffee by 2015.
Mondelez comprises the global snacking and food brands of the former Kraft Foods, following the spin-off of its North American grocery operations in October 2012.
The company's portfolio includes brands such as Jacobs coffee and Tang powdered beverages and Trident gums.
