If you were Al Kazzazi you would know what it takes to stay in business because he’s been serving up nourishment to San Diego for just short of 20 years. His deli isn’t successful based on the old formula for success: location, location, location. You’d find his business on the ground floor of the long stay hotel, The Sandford downtown.
The deli is called BBs Deli and Al makes it go. How can anybody offer food so cheap while creating substantial and really yummy food?
Over the years BBs Deli has survived recession/depression, full blown scaffold covered reconstruction, even breaking and entering with thieves smashing his window to grab an ATM machine. All I can figure is he, Kazzazi must be rich and he just enjoys giving away food at cost because I don’t see how he’s staying alive with the latest adversary, that being inflation.
I met BBs while on jury duty because I parked all week in the ACE parking lot just north of the deli, which is located at 1321 5th Ave. This place isn’t really close to anything that most people would go to and thus would allow you to drop in while you’re there doing whatever you did when you were in the neighborhood, but you should make a note of this address and you should go just for lunch or breakfast or dinner.
While there I talked to a local named Mimi J. who must have been under the influence because Ms. J. stated that she’d come more often if they’d drop their prices by a couple of bucks. From the link above I can only conclude, if Mr. Kazzazi were to do that, he’d spend more on the products than Ms. J.
I was happy to pay $5.70 for the New Yorker which is hot pastrami, swiss & sauerkraut with dijon mustard, served on toasted rye and it is perfectly delicious. Nancy went with the BLT on wheat bread for only $4.80 and was again perfect.
We went downtown just to eat at BBs and we will do it again and again any time we’re within 5-6 miles of the place. Go there yourself and give it a try. If nothing Al Kazzazi will make you happy for your efforts and when you tell him it was all good, he’ll nod and smile and will welcome you back next time.
