Idaho-based food processor B and D Foods is recalling nearly 33,500lbs of fully cooked meat and poultry products due to possible contamination by Listeria monocytogenes, according to the US Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).

The company identified the problem through microbiological testing and has issued a voluntary recall of the products over concerns of cross-contamination.

The products being recalled include 10lb boxes, containing two 5lb bags of ROYAL 'The 'Tempura King' Royal Tempura Chicken', Fully Cooked Tempura Chicken Breast,' with an identifying code of A-4615, and these products were distributed to foodservice and/or institutional customers in various states, including California, Colorado, Idaho, Oregon, Utah and Washington.

10lb boxes, containing two, 5lb bags of 'Blings! Chicken Breast with Parmesan Flavoring', featuring an identifying code of A-4844, which were distributed to foodservice and/or institutional customers in Idaho and Montana.

10lb boxes, containing two, 5lb bags of 'Steakhouse Tempura Seasoned Beef & Binder Strips', with an identifying code of A-1070-10, which were distributed to foodservice and/or institutional customers in Idaho and Montana.

Other products being recalled are 30lb boxes of 'Kettle Cooked Chicken Breast Pieces', bearing an identifying code of A-3900, which were distributed to an industrial customer in Ohio; and 30lb boxes of 'Fully Cooked Pork Strips', bearing an identifying code of A-3025-30, which were distributed to an industrial customer in Arizona and California.

The recall has been classified as Class I, which indicates a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that its consumption will lead to serious, adverse health consequences or death.

FSIS and B and D Foods have not received any reports of illnesses linked to the consumption of these products.

The agency has, however, advised people concerned about an illness to contact a healthcare provider.

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can lead to serious or life-threatening food-borne illness, with symptoms including fever, muscle aches, nausea or diarrhoea.

The bacterium can cause serious effects in pregnant women, newborn babies and those with compromised immune systems.
