Lucozade, Ribena, and J2O have become the latest brands to sign up to the Responsibility Deal's calorie reduction programme, which was initiated by the UK government in order to reduce obesity levels in the country.

Ribena ready-to-drink and Lucozade Energy will reduce 10% of sugar and calories content, while AG Barr has plefdged to reduce 5% across its beverage portfolio.

J2O will introduce two flavours in a new slim-line can, which represents 10% calorie reduction compared with its regular 275ml bottle.

UK Public Health Minister Anna Soubry said through the Responsibility Deal, the government is already achieving real progress in helping people reduce the calories and salt in their diet.

"Overall, more than 480 companies including many leading high street brands have signed up to the Responsibility Deal.

"All in the food industry have a part to play and I now expect companies which are not yet taking action to come forward and make pledges," Soubry added.

According to statistics, UK has some of the highest obesity rates in the developed world with 60% of adults and one third of 10 and 11-year-olds being either overweight or obese.
