Core Tip: Now that the Fruit Logistica is over again, the branch is preparing the consumer for rising prices.
costumersNow that the Fruit Logistica is over again, the branch is preparing the consumer for rising prices. Due to the increasing demand for fruits and vegetables this is inevitable, says the German branch union. The prices for fruits and vegetables in Germany must increase once again this year according to wholesalers. "It's misleading to tell the consumer that better and safer foods can be produced for increasingly cheaper prices," said Dieter Krauß, president of the 'Deutsche Fruchthandelsverband', in Berlin last week.

In the last year the prices for fruit have increased more than average, by around 4.4 percent. For vegetables the increase in price was at around 1.7% according to the German Central Bureau for Statistics. Krauß avoids a concrete prognosis for 2013. As the demand for fruits and vegetables worldwide is increasing, higher prices are inevitable. But it is not yet clear whether or not the branch will be able to push this through into large supermarket and discount chains.
