Denmark follows up on EU proposals for tighter food controls

EU countries will implement a number of additional tests to detect drug residues and meat that is labeled incorrectly. It was the outcome of the meeting of the EU Standing Committee on Food, SCoFCAH. Food Minister Mette Gjerskov welcome the decision. The close up of the initiatives already underway in Denmark, and will be launched immediately.

"It is important that we urgently restored European consumer confidence in food safety and have found the black sheep in the industry so that they can be held accountable," says Mette Gjerskov.

Total must take one test for drug residues for every 50 tons of meat, and there shall be at least 2250 DNA testing of different products to see if they are labeled incorrectly. The EU Commission will probably pay 75 per cent. the cost of the extra samples.

"Hestekødsskandalen is an international scandal, and therefore it is also important that EU countries working together to solve the case and draw conclusions. I am therefore pleased that the EU has taken steps to a common solution, "says Mette Gjerskov.

The initiatives to be implemented by 1 March, and the joint efforts of the EU are in line with the efforts of the Minister for Food and Food Administration decided to put in the time already Tuesday 12th February. The Danish effort involves a screening of prepared meals in the Danish retail trade, which is also part of the EU proposal. In addition, a study on businesses as promised recall suspect products back, and finally a follow-up analysis of the withdrawn items.
