Flexible packaging converters Exopack and Kobusch have entered into an agreement with the Netherlands-based PerfoTec to offer new packaging technology that extends the shelf life of produce.
The agreement will allow Exopack and Kobusch to expand their existing film offerings to fresh produce customers in North America and Europe respectively. Both the firms will be responsible for film supply and ongoing product support.
PerfoTec will be involved in manufacturing and delivery of the respiration meters and laser perforation equipment and software, as well as providing training and system support.
PerfoTec provides specialized equipment that measures the respiration rates of fruits and vegetables prior to film packaging. Its software calculates the required film permeability to allow for optimal respiration of the produce once it is packed.
The information is then used by the PerfoTec's patented Laser Perforation System to adapt the film permeability through precise micro perforations and each perforation is inspected by an integrated camera for accurate diameter and shape.
Exopack international strategies vice president Virag Patel said, "The PerfoTec respiration and micro perforation technology will allow us to expand our current product offerings to the produce market and provide our customers with a sustainable alternative to their current packaging methods."
Exopack is involved in the development, manufacture, and sourcing of flexible packaging and coatings solutions for various consumer and industrial end-use markets.
Kobusch offers solutions for hard packaging, half-flexible and fully flexible packaging products, systems for protein based and convenience foods, dried foods and pharmaceutical purposes.
PerfoTec, founded in 2004, has developed the new standard in Modified Atmosphere Packaging for fresh-cut produce in the world. It offers packers and processors the tools and the knowledge to manage the protective atmosphere in the packages.
