Diageo has launched a lawsuit that accuses a rival of copying the packaging of its Crown Royal Canadian whisky brand.
In a statement, Diageo said it believes Texas distributor Mexcor is “trying to confuse consumers” into thinking that its Canadian whisky products are Crown Royal line extensions by packaging them in “copycat drawstring bags”. The global drinks firm also alleges that by using 'Crown' or 'Crown Club' in their product names Mexcor is attempting to mislead people.
“Diageo already is aware of consumer confusion as a result of these actions, and is taking appropriate legal action in defense of its legendary brand and marks,” the company said in a statement.
Mexcor has yet to respond to a request for comment from just-drinks.
The company's products include Texas Crown Club Whisky and Potter's Crown Canadian Whisky, according to its website.
