As part of an Earth Day promotion Publix will donate $1 (up to $40,000) to the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership for each purchase of a 1-pound bag of Gulf shrimp through April 24.

The promotion kicked off April 11.

In a related video posted on the retailer’s website, seafood category manager Guy Pizzuti explains how the retailer is working with Sustainable Fisheries Partnership to improve its sustainability efforts. The Sustainable Fisheries Partnership is a non-profit group working with seafood supply chains to rebuild fish stocks and reduce the environmental effects of fishing and fish farming.

Among other initiatives, Publix and its shrimp supplier are improving fishing gear to reduce the number of turtles and fish that can get caught in shrimp traps.

“Customers can come into Publix and know that we’re doing the right things in terms of sustainability,” Pizzuti says in the video.
