Global Fresh Foods, a US-based provider of naturally extended shelf-life technology, has announced that it has successfully tested its technology with H&G (head off and gutted) and HOG (head on and gutted) salmon.

According to the company, the recently conducted 30-day tests showed that both H&G and HOG trims can be shipped by sea using Global Fresh Foods' controlled atmosphere technology.

The products arrive at the destination market with the same fresh quality as those transported by air, and provide a better alternative than shipping frozen fish.

Till date, Global Fresh Foods' oxygen reducing technology was primarily used to ship salmon fillets from Chile to the US. The successful test results means that the company can now offer salmon producers across the globe the ability to expand into new geographies. It also opens the door to reach customers in Asia and Europe where H&G and HOG trims are preferred.

Global Fresh Foods chief executive officer Mark Barnekow said that Chilean and other salmon producers can now compete on a global scale by utilizing the Global Fresh Foods controlled atmosphere system to reach any market, in any trim.

"They are no longer limited to selling to the American market which is heavily fillet oriented."

"We recognized the global market for salmon includes large volumes of H&G and HOG trims. Producers can now ship these trims fresh instead of frozen and can maximize their quality and market price," Barnekow added.

Based in San Francisco, California with operations in Talcahuano, Chile, Global Fresh Foods provides naturally extended shelf-life technology. The company's SAF-D® technology system uses its patented oxygen management techniques to create and maintain an all-natural controlled atmosphere environment that extends the shelf life of perishable proteins.

This breakthrough technology allows suppliers of fresh protein products to ship by ocean rather than more expensive airfreight, while delivering a fresh, high quality product to customers.
