Seoul Metropolitan Government in South Korea is in plans to export its bottled tap water – Arisu – through its Office of Waterworks department to China and Southeast Asian countries.
This move is aimed at promoting the city's advanced drinking water treatment system.
At present, the city produces eight million 350ml bottles of the tap water every year for the Presidential Office and various international conferences in Seoul, reported Yonhap news agency.
Arisu meets 155 quality evaluation requirements recommended by the World Health Organization for drinking water and has approval from NSF International and UL.
Seoul waterworks management department official Kim Hyung-kyu was quoted by the news agency as saying that they have used advanced ozone and granular activated carbon purification technology to manufacture Arisu to reduce the effects of taste-altering and odor-inducing substances.
"To make inroads into foreign markets, we plan to revise a local law that bans selling the water," Hyung-kyu added.
"We expect the bottled water to help promote not only the product itself but also the city's know-how for drinking water treatment."
