Coca-Cola has introduced mid-calorie soda Life in Mexico, where carbonated beverage sales are declining due to a new tax imposed on sugary beverages.

Sweetened with stevia, Coca-Cola Life may be of interest in the country where consumers are fighting obesity and diabetes is in rise, The Wall Street Journal reported.

To be available from September, each 12oz can of the drink contains 64 calories and 16g of sugar.

Coca-Cola Life was launched in Argentina and Chile in 2013 and in the UK this year.

Meanwhile, the company said that it has suspended plans to expand the bottling plant in Varanasi, India, as it did not receive the required environmental clearances.

Coca-Cola's proposal for the $25m expansion was opposed by the by the local people as the plant may over-exploit and pollute the groundwater.

Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages has announced that it will consider relocating the line after securing all regulatory approvals.
