Save Mart SupermarketsSave Mart Supermarkets donated more than a million pounds of perishable groceries to area food banks during the first quarter of this year.

Through its partnership with Feeding America, the 226-unit chain arranged to have local food banks collect dairy, deli and bakery products, as well as fresh produce, daily from its stores.

The donations were bred of a joint effort between Save Mart’s own Fresh Food Rescue Program launched last year and Feeding America, a national, domestic hunger-relief organization.

“We are honored to work with our partner, Feeding America, on the Fresh Food Rescue program,” said Save Mart’s public affairs director, Alicia Rockwell, today in a press release.

“Our goal is to donate a total of 4 million pounds of perishable groceries by the end of the 2013.”

A spokesman for Feeding America pointed out in the same press release that Save Mart’s donations in the first quarter of this year “provided 882,000 nutritious meals for our neighbors in need.”
