Remke biggs Markets here is running an attention-getting three-day special on a six-pack of glazed doughnuts marking National Donut Day on Friday.
A six-pack of fresh-made, glazed doughnuts retails normally for $5.94, but for the next three days, that will be dropped to $2.99, Karen Wilson, the 13-unit chain’s deli-bakery field merchandiser said.
The Salvation Army launched National Donut Day — the first Friday in June — to commemorate its offering doughnuts to U.S. troops overseas during World War I.
Another area retailer, Riesbeck’s Markets, St. Clairsville, Ohio, known for its store-made doughnuts, has participated in National Donut Day for the last two years, and is now looking to boost sales by promoting yeast-raised rather than cake doughnuts.
“I know the traditional Salvation Army doughnut is a cake doughnut, but I cleared it with their officials to offer yeast-raised in Salvation Army logo boxes,” said John Chickery, the retailer’s bakery director.
“Generally, we sell many more yeast-raised than cake doughnuts, so we think this will be good.”
Riesbeck’s donates 10% of its National Donut Day sales to local chapters of the Salvation Army.
Meanwhile, a National Donut Day celebration has been orchestrated in Cincinnati by the Greater Cincinnati Retail Bakers Association and the local chapter of The Salvation Army.
