After banning restaurants and markets from selling foie gras, California's latest food ban, against shark fin, has just gone into effect.
According to the Los Angeles Times, six other states have banned the sale of shark fins, and California has now become the seventh. Shark fins are often found in Chinese cooking and are used in celebratory foodstuff. While the fin doesn't actually contribute any flavor, it is valued as a thickening agent and for textural purposes. The ban, which officially began on July 1, allows restaurants and grocers 18 months to get rid of any excess fins.
