Rawlings, a British independent glass packaging specialist, has developed a new light weight glass bottle – Ethical Glass – for UK-based bottled water maker Belu.
Rawlings has collaborated with glass manufacturer OwensIllinois (OI) to reduce the weight of the previous lightweight 750ml and 330ml bottles both by 20g.
Ethical Glass is made from natural materials. It can be recycled to use in the production of the bottle again.
The light weight bottle will also be made available to other mineral water producers in a bid to lower the industry's carbon footprint.
Rawlings managing director Tom Wood was quoted by packagingeurope.com as saying that the Ethical Glass was developed to improve the environmental impact of the glass packaging industry.
"For Rawlings, the collaboration with Belu was a successful meeting of minds and the first outcome is this ground breaking bottle. The adoption of Ethical Glass will make a difference and improve our environment," Wood added.
Belu Water CEO Karen Lynch said: "This partnership has demonstrated how new product development can be extremely successful when all parties are truly motivated and engaged by a clearly defined goal."
