Sri Lanka: dicyandiamide was detected in Fonterra milk products

The Sri Lankan government announced that a variety of milk powders imported from New Zealand, including Fonterra Group, was detected to contain chemical substance dicyandiamide. The government has ordered to stop selling all the New Zealand’s milk products.

On this regard, Fonterra said in a statement that its products Angaur did not comprehensive bans in Sri Lanka.

Fonterra products recive an eviction notice

According to several media reports, Sri Lanka Industrial Technology Research Institute recently tested dairy products imported from New Zealand and found a number of New Zealand milk products contain chemicals - dicyandiamide, including the Fonterra Group Angaur brands.

DCD is a complex nitrogenous fertilizer ingredients. Spraying this fertilizer onto the grass, can promote the growth of grass. At the same times, cattle and sheep eat this grass can reduce nitrogen dioxide emissions.

Although the New Zealand Government's commitment that low levels of dicyandiamide in foods wll not endanger the health of consumers, the Sri Lankan government still ordered all milk products imported from New Zealand off the shelves within 48 hours. Meanwhile, the Maldives , neighbor of Sri Lanka, also bans Fonterra's products affected by this storm.

Sri Lanka is New Zealand's fifth largest export market for milk. 98% of the products are dairy products.
