Sri Lankan seafood company Lihini Sea Foods has received Friend of the Sea sustainability certification for its yellowfin tuna and swordfish fishing operations.
The company fishes for both species in the Eastern Indian Ocean. Friend of the Sea said the stocks seem to be healthy, the company does not fish in protected areas, and bycatch does not include “Red list” species, according to Friend of the Sea.
“Friend of the Sea has become the leading sustainability standard for many species and this recognition provides an important added value for our products,” said Malintha Fernando of Lihini.
