Lucas Bols, an Amsterdam-based cocktail liqueur and spirits producer, has unveiled Bols Honey Liqueur after consulting with around 20,000 bartenders.
Created by master distiller Piet van Leijenhorst, the liqueur is a new addition to the on-trade and serves as an alternative to sugar for sweetening the cocktails.
Made from different honeys such as acacia, sunflower and malt, the 17% ABV liqueur offers complex flavors, strong malty taste, buttery and vanilla notes, and hints of orange peel on the nose.
Lucas Bols CEO Huub van Doorne said they discovered that honey is the most popular alternative to sugar in cocktails even though it is extremely difficult to work with behind the bar, often sticking to the bottom of the glass.
"This is an exciting launch as by engaging and involving bartenders in the development process, we have been able to provide the solution to a long-standing issue and innovate to enhance the drinks experience for consumers," van Doorne added.
"It also meets the need for fresh and natural products and offers a premium and versatile alternative, enabling bars to offer a point of difference."
The liqueur was recently presented at Cocktails and Spirits event in Paris. It will be officially launched at the Bar Convent in Berlin on 8-9 October 2013.
The Bols Honey Liqueur will be available in 500ml and 700ml bottles in select markets across the world.
