The Ministry of Production (Produce) has reported a 46 percent decline in seafood exports. According to Produce exports generates $207.4 million in revenue in June of this year compared to $383.6 million in June of 2012.
According to the ministry, the volume of exports fell by 49.7 percent, to 104,900 tons compared to 256,900 tons shipped a year ago.
This decrease was primarily due to lower fishmeal sales to indirect human consumption.
According to the current figures from the Statistical Bulletin issued by Produce, between January and June 2013 the sale of a total of 511,500 tons of seafood products abroad generated $1.07 billion, while in the same period last year seafood products abroad generated $1.78 billion.
According to the Andina news agency, in June 2013, a total of 60,800 tons of fishmeal were sold for $110.2 million, while in the same month last year 153,800 tons had been sent abroad for $203.4 million, representing declines amounting to 61 percent in volume and 45.8 percent in value.
The main markets for Peruvian fishmeal were China, Japan, Chile and Germany, who bought 212,850 tons of total sales from January to June 2013 (241,000 tons).
June exports increased sales of fishmeal abroad in the first six months, amounting to $443.2 million, 53 percent less than in the same period of 2012 ($942.8 million).
Fish oil
Australia, Belgium, Canada, Chile and China accounted for 76.6 percent of exports of fish oil.
In the first six months of 2013, a total of 29,900 tons of fish oil was sold abroad, 81.6 percent less than in the same period last year (162,500 tons).
These sales generated $79.6 million, down 65.7 percent from the same period in 2012 ($231.8 million).
In June 2013 some 35,300 tons of frozen products were also exported, a volume that accounts for a decrease of 14.8 percent from 41,400 tons exported a year earlier.
In the first six months of this year 185,400 tons of frozen products were sold abroad, which is a 3.5 percent less than in the same period in 2012.
