mango season has come to a close and at the moment Fruitmarket is being supplied by Brazil and Ivory Coast. According to Eryvan Pires, Peru finished just a few weeks before Easter. "At that point, there were shortages and therefore prices increased to between 7 and 8 Euro. After Easter, prices dropped again, as usual, and now they are back to normal levels. Ivory Coast has just started and its produce is also helping normalise prices."Satisfied with Peruvian season
Eryvan said to be satisfied with the way the Peruvian season has gone. "It has been a good season in terms of prices and volume, better than last year, when there was too much volume and many had quality problems. Things did not go as smoothly in January, as Brazil and Peru overlapped, which resulted in prices falling to 1 to 2 Euro. But just as quickly, prices stabilised, and at the end they could even be considered sky high. Now prices for some retailers reach 5.50 Euro, and even 6.50 at the spot market."
"Brazil arrived with small volumes and reached great prices. For now, everything is also going well for Ivory Coast; the value for money is good," explains the trader. "Brazil's production this season was smaller due to severe droughts. Most Brazilian mangoes were therefore demanded for domestic consumption, just like last year. Brazil exported even less than the historical average. The country is shipping about 50 containers per week and most of them are of the varieties Palmer and Tommy. Keitt mangoes are expected from August to October and the Kent variety up to December."
Preferred varieties
He stated that different parts of Europe have preferences for certain varieties. "In northern Europe (France and the countries above) they prefer the Kent. In Southern Europe (Spain, Portugal and Italy) the most popular is the Palmer, while the Tommy Atkins is demanded especially in Eastern Europe and some other countries.
