Core Tip: Meat producer Vion Food has decided to concentrate production at its regional sites in Germany.
Meat producer Vion Food has decided to concentrate production at its regional sites in Germany.

Under the new company set-up, the slaughterhouses and meat cutting plants in Emstek and Zeven in the German federal state of Lower Saxony and in Perleberg in the federal state of Brandenburg will occupy a central position, in a bid to improve 'overall efficiency', according to Vion.

As a consequence of this restructuring operation, the company intends to close its branches in Kasel-Golzig (VION Lausitz GmbH) and Minden (Atlas-Handelsgesellschaft mbH), each processing around 5,000 pigs a week.

The closure of the plants in Kasel-Golzig and Minden may impact up to 113 of Vion's own employees and some 85 people hired through external service providers.

Smaller sites used by the Pork Business Unit will be divested.

'Vion Food has decided to implement this restructuring operation in order to further secure the company's strong roots within the regional agricultural sector', the company said in a statement.

'Nothing will change for customers from the meat-processing industry and food retail: they will continue to receive their goods in the same manner and with the same tried and trusted quality and freshness they are accustomed to'.

The company, which employs a total of 21,000 staff added, 'Vion Food has decided that frozen convenience production at the Wunstorf site is no longer part of the core business. The sales process for this part of the company will start soon'.
