26,000 tons of mangoes have been exported to the United States and 6,000 to Canada throughout the year, whose economic impact has not yet been calculated, as this corresponds to the Ministry of Economy, said Wenceslao Lopez Vega, deputy secretary of the Field Secretariat Marketing.
"The production and export of mangoes with designation of origin reached record numbers, and we managed to maintain a significant decrease in pests that could cause damage to the farmers’ crops," he said.
Lopez Vega said mango production covers 13 municipalities in the Coastal region such as Suchiate, Frontera Hidalgo, Metapa, Tuxtla Chico, Tapachula, Mazatán, Huehuetán, Tuzantán, Huixtla, Villa Comaltitlán, Escuintla, Acapetahua and Acacoyagua.
"These municipalities are maintaining a superior quality than in the rest of the Republic, as the flavour reached in other parts of the country tends to be different," he said.
He also said that as part of market expansion they had also sent 54 tons of Athaulf mangoes to Europe, "where the market is very large and the fruit has a good price, however due to the long distances we are working to improve storage."
"We are also looking to enter the Japanese market, although it’s somewhat difficult due to the strictness of their rules, but we are working to enter this important niche," he said.
