William Grant & Sons has begun construction of a new €35m pot still whiskey and malt whiskey distillery at Clonminch on the outskirts of Tullamore, Co Offaly to meet the long-term production demands for the Irish whiskey brand Tullamore Dew.
The new distillery is expected to be unveiled in autumn 2014. The move will result in the creation of around 200 construction jobs and 25 jobs at the distillery.
When completed, the Tullamore distillery will have a capacity to produce 1.84 million liters of whiskey annually.
Commenting on the development, William Grant & Sons chief executive Stella David said that this investment ensures that the company can cope with demand as the brand continues to grow globally.
Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Simon Coveney said for many years, Irish whiskey has been one of the strongest and most distinctive products in the world, renowned for its quality and heritage, with a dual impact in terms of the company's exports and tourism.
"Tullamore Dew is one of the key drivers of this success. I would like to commend William Grant & Sons for its commitment to the town of Tullamore where it is investing significantly to ensure that Tullamore Dew is coming back to its roots," Coveney added.
Constructed by Dunne (BCE), the new distillery will employ traditional distillation practices integrated with advanced green technologies.
