South Africa-based franchise restaurant chain Spur Corporation will further increase its retail footprint in the country by expanding the recently acquired Captain DoRegos fast-food chain.

Captain DoRegos - which specialises in "value-orientated" take-away fare such as chicken, seafood and burgers - was acquired by Spur in May 2012 for R30m ($3.01m).

Spur is embarking on an aggressive expansion of the brand with plans to open new DoRegos eateries in Maputo, Gabarone, and the Eastern Cape to the rest of the country.

Spur CEO Pierre van Tonder said, "We think we can increase the chain from the current base of 75 stores to between 120 and 130 by expanding into the Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga markets in the next five years."

As per sources, Spur plans to open at least 26 new eateries in South Africa. Five Panarottis, six Spur, seven Captain DoRegos, and four John Dorys branches would be opened in the first six months of the current financial year.

The restaurant chain will also further expand in the African market by opening new eateries in Nigeria, Swaziland, Namibia, Tanzania and the Seychelles.

Spur Corporation operates 267 Spur Steak Ranches, 61 Panarottis Pizza Pasta restaurants, 29 John Dory's Fish Grill Sushi restaurants, and 72 Captain DoRegos outlets within South Africa.

Globally, the group has established 36 Spur, 12 Panarottis and 2 Captain DoRegos outlets.
