The theme of this year’s World Food Day (16 October) is “Sustainable Food Systems for Food Security and Nutrition”. Every link in the food chain must be protected and monitored to help ensure the availability and accessibility of diverse, nutritious foods – and enable consumers to choose healthy diets. As the body responsible for risk assessment in the EU food system, EFSA has an important contribution to make in keeping our food safe and healthy.
As the European Commission said in a statement to mark World Food Day: “It is becoming increasingly clear that we need to focus not only on providing the right quantity of food but also on its quality. We need to make sure that people get food which provides all of the nutrients they need to develop their full potential. It’s unacceptable that more than 3 million children still die each year from not getting enough of the right food.
“On this year’s World Food Day, we call on other donors and partners to ensure that we all act together in doing what we can to make sure that people have not just enough to eat but also the right quality of food, no matter where they live.”
