Core Tip: Exports of aquaculture products from Peru are expected to reach $250 million this year, a record growth of between 21 and 23 per cent over last year, said the Exporters Association (Adex).
Adex President Eduardo Routledge, said the Peruvian aquaculture sector has growth potential because the export of this sector increased by 13 per cent annually between 2008 and 2012.

From January to September this year, Peru shipped to international markets more than 20,000 tonnes of aquaculture products valued at $196 million, according to the Business Intelligence System Adex Data Trade.

"We have important areas on the coast, in lakes and rivers in the mountains, and jungle. All this constitutes a huge potential that we are not taking advantage of," he said.

The export of scallops and paiche led growth this year, driven by the placement of posts in new markets such as Thailand, Russia, China, Korea, and Indonesian.

"In 2011 we had only 74 markets and by 2012 we had 114. We hope that in 2013 it will reach over 120 markets," he said.

He also explained that the global demand for aquaculture products comes from Europe and North America.
