According to Chu Se Pepper Association, low pepper production in Vietnam this year has led to prices rocketing in the past few days in the Central Highland Provinces.
In the pepper cultivation areas of Chu Se and Chu Puh Districts in Gia Lai Province, pepper production this year was merely 37.7 quintals per hectare, a decline of nearly 30 percent against the previous year.
Farmers in the Central Highland Provinces had been enjoying a surge in price of pepper from VND150,000 per kilo to VND160,000 per kilo till late.
If pepper quality meets requirements in moisture, purity, and natural weight, the buying price will be VND175,000-180,000 per kilo, the highest ever in history.
However, pepper stocks with farmers and major dealers in the Central Highland Provinces has almost run out, as they had already sold pepper when the price was VND130,000-140,000 per kilo.
