Premium wine producers of South Africa have created a new association called Cape Vintners Classification (CVC) at Ellerman House in Cape Town to promote the area wines globally.

CVC, which will begin the accreditation process for membership starting 2 January 2014, will also work towards building the country's reputation as quality wine producer.

The new association will have three tiers of classification namely Site Specific Wines, Estate Wines and Wine of Origin.

To become a member of CVC, wine producers should have a minimum 20ha of vineyards, a winemaking facility with a capacity of 100t, apart from cellar door facilities.

CVC founding member Johann Rupert said, "We produce many world-class wines and it's time that our top producers begin telling their story more forcefully and the CVC is the ideal vehicle to do this."
