New research reports that a glass of red wine each night may help people with type 2 diabetes manage cholesterol and cardiac health.  The study also found that both red and white wine can improve sugar control, but this is dependent on alcohol metabolism genetic profiling.  
 
People with diabetes are more susceptible to cardiovascular diseases, and clinical recommendations for moderate alcohol consumption continues to be controversial.  Researchers found that red wine was superior in improving metabolic profiles.

The study followed 224 diabetic patients for two years.  Participants followed the Mediterranean diet and were assigned to consume either 5 ounces of red wine, white wine or water.
 
The Mediterranean diet emphasizes eating primarily plant-based foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes and nuts.

The diet replaces butter with olive oil, uses herbs and spices to flavor foods, limits red meat, and substitutes fish or poultry and includes red wine in moderation.
 
Research has shown that the Mediterranean diet reduces risk of heart disease.  One study that consisted of 1.5 million adults demonstrated that the Mediterranean diet is not only associated with reduced risk of heart disease, but also cancer, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease.

The study found that only those who metabolize alcohol slowly had improvement in blood sugar; while those who metabolized alcohol quickly did not receive any benefits from the alcohols glucose control effect. 
Wine did not affect blood pressure, liver function tests or adiposity.  Sleep quality was significantly improved for those who consumed either red or white wine.
 
The study found that dry red wine has sevenfold higher levels of total phenols, and 4-13 fold higher levels of resveratrol than white wine.
 
Remember it’s important to consume any alcohol in moderation and as part of a healthy diet.  If you want to increase the health benefits of your 5 ounce glass of red wine, consider searching out to organic and sulfate free wines!
