Vegware, the UK’s first completely compostable food packaging company, has been named one of the top 100 businesses in Europe and a Ruban d’Honneur recipient in the 2013/2014 European Business Awards.
The Edinburgh-based eco packaging SME was selected as a finalist for Infosys Business of the Year with Turnover €0-25m, and will be in the final round with winners announced in May.
Vegware is a global brand of award-winning eco disposables made entirely from renewable or recycled materials such as sugar cane fibre or corn.
It’s eco packaging is certified compostable, able to biodegrade in under 12 weeks in food waste recycling facilities.
Joe Frankel, Vegware founder and managing director said: “I was inspired by the American can-do spirit and saw the huge potential of these renewable materials to reduce environmental impacts before and after use. At the core of what we do is a simple realisation – you can’t recycle food with plastic in it, and you can’t recycle plastic with food on it. Vegware can be simply recycled with food waste after use.”
Run from its Edinburgh HQ, Vegware now has operations in the UK, US, South Africa, Australasia and the UAE, with a Europe-wide network of distribution partners from Iceland to Portugal.
UK clients range from the national contract caterers and food distributors through to government offices, NHS units and independent artisan cafes and delis.
