Metro Cash & Carry in Germany is now using radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology to track secondary packaging of Mars products in order to improve supply chain operations.

Packaging on Mars, Twix, Bounty and Snickers products, being delivered to selected stores, will be equipped with RFID tags as part of the project.

Four Metro stores will participate in the Metro Group trial this quarter with the aim of improving supply chain operations.

Metro has partnered with the confectionary manufacturer and packaging supplier Mondi for the field trial under the Smart North-Rhine Westphalia initiative.

It is hoped the government-funded operation will reduce stock levels in the supply chain and increase product availability in outlets.
