Turnover in Dutch supermarkets fell by 1.7% in the first quarter of 2014.
Industry experts are pointing toward the lack of an Easter period in this year's Q1 for the drop, as the holiday fell into the first quarter of 2013.
The total turnover for Dutch supermarkets in the first quarter of 2014 amounted to €8.21 billion, compared to €8.35 billion for the same period last year.
German market research company GfK said that if surplus sales from the easter period of 2013 were not included, then the trend would be stable.
The number of receipts issued by Dutch supermarkets was up 1.5% compared to last year, but the average amount spent on each receipt dropped from €22.53 to €21.90.
Sales on Sunday's in Dutch supermarkets have gone up by a massive 23% over the past two years, according to GfK, who say that the shopping habits of young singles seems to be driving this growth.
