Australian estabmilklishment Pactum Dairy has opened a new $42m UHT milk processing plant in Shepparton, Victoria. The plant can process around 100 million liters of milk within the next three years.

The new plant, which has secured an investment of $950,000 from the Victorian Coalition Government, is anticipated to bring economic benefit to the region and Victoria.

For its new plant, Pactum Dairy received a funding of $700,000 from the Industries for Today and Tomorrow program.

The remainder $250,000 from the government's $1bn Regional Growth Fund was used by the company in the extension and connection of natural gas to the Shepparton site.

Victoria Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss said the group is capitalizing on new opportunities presented by new and emerging markets, creating fresh prospects for the regional as well as national economies.

"This facility is a great example of strategic, well-planned and well-executed infrastructure that will improve the competitiveness of the region's dairy sector and underpin new jobs and economic opportunities for the Shepparton region," Truss added.

Pactum Dairy reported overall sales at around $100m and has the capacity to export up to $37m worth of produce to the Chinese market.
