UK Green Investment Bank (GIB) will offer £5m in funding for energy efficiency projects at Scottish distilleries.
Aberfeldy distillery, owned by Bacardi, will be one among the distilleries to benefit from the funding. The move follows GIB's announcement of an investment at the Tomatin distillery in 2013.
The funding amount will be used in the installation of biomass boilers, to replace the existing, inefficient, heavy fuel oil boilers at the distilleries, which will lower energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions.
Fueled by sustainably sourced wood pellet fuel, the boilers will be used to produce steam, which will used in the whiskey production process.
GIB group operations director Rob Cormie said the projects will help distilleries save money and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.
"I would encourage other distilleries to install a biomass boiler or other energy saving technology - an investment to make long term savings and to help to meet the industry's ambitious green targets," added Cormie.
The investment is being made by the Equitix-managed fund, Energy Saving Investments, in which GIB is an investor, alongside the Equitix Energy Efficiency Fund.
This is expected to create new jobs and support the local supply chain.
