Zambia has been selected among six other countries to benefit from an estimated 250 million U.S. dollars from the Global Agriculture and Food Security Fund Program (GAFSP) to improve food production in the country, the Zambia Daily Mail reported on Thursday.
Zambia is among six other countries that will receive funds from the GAFSP facility under the recent round of proposals submitted to the World Bank mid last year. The facility will also see funding go to develop value chains in building capacity in districts with the highest levels of poverty and food insecurity.
A statement released by the World Bank said Zambia will receive 31.1 million dollars after its proposal was approved.
"Successful country proposals demonstrated a high level of need, a supportive policy environment and a comprehensive plan for agricultural development," the statement said.
According to the statement, successful country proposals were selected by a GAFSP steering committee from a very competitive pool of 20 complete proposals and that the committee comprised members from donor and receipts countries as well as representatives from civil society organizations, supervising entities and other stakeholders.
Other countries that have been selected as recipients include Burkina Faso, Honduras, Kyrgyzstan, Mali, Nicaragua and Uganda.
GAFSP is a multi-donor trust fund established in 2010 that seeks to improve food security and reduce poverty by delivering targeted financing for the agriculture sector in low-income countries.
