In light of concerns over the quality of fresh fruit imported from South Africa by major chain stores, Zambia's High Commissioner to South Africa, Emmanuel Mwamba, has called on Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS) to intensify inspections.

On April 22, Mr Mwamba said that reports that some fruit imported from South Africa by some chain stores in Zambia are rotten, are disturbing, because South Africa has very high standards on its exports.

He was responding to concerns by former Zambian High Commissioner to South Africa Leslie Mbula, who appealed to the mission to bring the issue to the attention of South African authorities so that measures can be taken to curb the alleged export of rotten fruit to Zambia.
