Shetland’s LeTushkarrwick Brewery, brewers of 60°North and Skipper’s Ticket, are launching a new beer on 18 August 2014 – Tushkar.

It is the Brewery’s first oatmeal stout.

Celebrating the Shetland Islands’ heritage of peat cutting, the beer is named after the implement which Shetlanders use to cut peats from the barren hillsides.

With very few trees on Shetland, Shetlanders have relied on peat as their main source of fuel for thousands of years.

Also called a tusker, tuskar, tushker, toysker, or tuisker, this spade, with a flanged blade used to slice out peats with a vertical thrust from the top of a peat bank, has played a vital role in Shetland’s social history and still does today.

Alison Graham, On-Trade Sales Manager, Lerwick Brewery, said:

“With our flagship products perfected and selling well in the UK, we wanted to bring something a little different into our product range.

“We hope our oatmeal stout will interest a different sector of the market, allowing customers who prefer a heavier refreshment than a pale ale or lager, a chance to taste a piece of Shetland.”

Rhanna Turberville, Brewery Manager, Lerwick Brewery, said:

“We’ve had a lot of success with 60°North and Skipper’s Ticket, our craft lager and pale ale, and we have always been interested in complementing these two brews with something richer.

“Tushkar is the first darker beer we have worked with and were immediately impressed with the complexity of the flavours and its rich, dark colour.

“We chose to use oats in our stout, not only for the smooth, rounded mouth feel they give the beer, but also to celebrate our link to our Scottish roots.”

Tushkar’s strong coffee and chocolate notes, paired with light carbonation and its 5.5% ABV, mean
that it is ideally placed as an after-dinner tipple.

Available in a 330ml bottle, it has an alcohol value of 5.5% and, with no isinglass, it is suitable for vegans.

It is launched on 18 August and will become available to customers in Shetland and across Scotland and the UK through Lerwick Brewery’s range of distributors and, for the trade, direct from the Brewery
