Core Tip: 12 of Australia's family-owned wine companies have been touring the Hunter Valley to develop strategies to ensure the industry's survival, after years of financial difficulties.
Hayley Purbrick from the Victorian-based Tahbilk winery said it seems the Hunter is picking-up after the devastating impact of the high Australian dollar and oversupply problems ABC Rural reports.

“Certainly it's been quite difficult for most wineries over the last five years,” she said.

“There's still a lot of extra wine about and I guess in that sense you have to look for other avenues to sell your product.”

Purbrick says the high dollar has had a huge impact, but the industry is raising its profile in international markets.

“The dollar's not going to really change and we don't have much control over that. We also need to be able to show people outside Australia that we have a premium product that deserves to be recognised at a high price point.”
