Galaktika, a Russian dairy producer, is said to be in talks with the Indian dairy producer Amul for imports of cheeses and dried milk.
Amul's managing director Rupinder Sodhi was quoted by en.itar-tass.com as saying that Amul has not decided on the volume of possible dairy products supplies to Galaktika as of now.
The company noted that imports of cheeses and dried milk will depend on the present market conditions.
Galaktika presently has two dairy farms and three dairy plants. The company also leases some of its production facilities to Valio. Galaktika declined to comment on a possible deal.
Last month, the Russian government banned imports of beef, pork, poultry, fish, cheese, dairy products, fruit and vegetables from Australia, Canada, Norway, the US and the EU for one year in retaliation to Western sanctions over the Ukraine crisis. Since then, Russia is scouting for new markets to increase supplies.
Formed in 1946, Amul is one of the largest dairy producers in India. It is a brand managed by a cooperative body, the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation.
