FSA appoints advisory committee on microbiological safety of food

Core Tip: FSA Chair, Tim Bennett has announced the appointment of Professor Miren Iturriza-Gómara and Mr Alec Kyriakides along with three other reappointments to the Advisory Committee on the Microbiological Safety of Food (ACMSF).
FSA Chair, Tim Bennett has announced the appointment of Professor Miren Iturriza-Gómara and Mr Alec Kyriakides along with three other reappointments to the Advisory Committee on the Microbiological Safety of Food (ACMSF).

The ACMSF provides the Agency with independent advice on the microbiological safety of food.

Professor Miren Iturriza-Gómara is Professor of Virology at the Department of Clinical Infection Microbiology and Immunology, Institute of Infection and Global Health, University of Liverpool. She has over the last 15 years developed an international reputation in enteric viruses. She has carried out no political activity in the past five years and holds no other Ministerial appointments. His term is from 1 April 2015 until 31 March 2019.

Mr Alec Kyriakides is the Head of Product Quality Safety and Supplier Performance at J Sainsbury's plc. He is a microbiologist with experience in retail product safety and quality management. He has worked for Sainsbury's since 1992 having joined as Company Microbiologist responsible for establishing a strategic approach to the identification and management of microbiological safety and quality. He has carried out no political activity in the past five years and holds no other Ministerial appointments. His term is from 1 April 2015 until 31 March 2019.

Reappointed members are:

Dr Roy Betts is currently Head of Food Microbiology, Campden BRI, formerly Campden and Chorleywood Food Research Association managing a 35 strong food microbiology team involved in research and testing work. His term has been extended until 31 March 2019.

Prof Goutam (Bob) Adak is Head of Gastrointestinal Infection Surveillance, Public Health England, Colindale. His term has been extended until 31 March 2019.
