Washington State is struggling with severe drought and during the last few days, wildfires hit central and eastern parts of the state.
In Wenatchee, the Bluebird packing facility of Domex Superfresh Growers was destroyed. The facility packs organic apples, pears and conventional as well as organic cherries. ”Luckily, there was not much fruit in the facility,” says Howard Nager with Domex. “However, packaging materials were destroyed and we are in the process of getting those replenished. We plan to move the cherry packing to our Monson Fruit facility in Selah, a little further south in Washington,” added Nager.
Monday afternoon, Nager commented that “the fire is under control and Domex representatives are assessing the damage. Luckily no one was hurt.”
Bob Mast from Columbia Marketing International wrote in a statement that CMI’s warehouse facilities and orchards are outside the firezone. “It started as an uncontrolled wildfire in the foothills surrounding Wenatchee,” Mast said. “The dry condition of the hillsides combined with high winds and unseasonably hot temperatures caused the uncontained fire to quickly spread.”
Erin Smith from Rainier Fruit Company said that the company’s packing facilities are a lot further down, in Selah and Prosser. “We have ranches with cherries, apples and pears up in the Wenatchee area, but the fires haven’t impacted the orchards,” she added.
