Core Tip: This is a new type of public-private partnership for FAO which could become a model for collaborations in the future.
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations (UN) will be partnering with Autogrill to reduce food waste and losses.
Autogrill, who operates motorway and airport restaurants across 30 countries will also help in supporting the products of small-scale farmers in developing countries.
The three-year agreement would see FAO help Autogrill by providing it tools to track and bring down food waste across its 4,000 stores.
An estimated 1.3bn tonnes of food is said to be either wasted or lost across the globe annually.
However, in recent years, there has been a growing awareness among restaurants and food and beverage stores about enhancing their sustainability footprint.
FAO rural infrastructure and agro-industries division director Eugenia Serova said: "This is a new type of public-private partnership for FAO which could become a model for collaborations with other retailers in the future."
Autogrill has also agreed to enter FAO's Save Food Global Initiative that will involve actors along the food chain in common strategies to cut food loss and waste.
Autogrill Group European public affairs manager Luigi Troiani said: "The public-private partnership belongs to the tradition of Autogrill. From today onward the leading global restaurants chain for the people on the move will continue that tradition jointly with FAO. Our social responsibility awareness will certainly be improved by the relationship we are beginning today."
Additionally, Autogrill will also focus on the sourcing of its products.
