A study led by scientists at Mie University Hospital in Japan and other organizations suggests drinking sugar-sweetened beverages can drastically increase risk of developing diabetes mellitus in older men and women.

The study shows the risk of developing diabetes mellitus were be more than tripled during a 3.6-year follow-up in study participants who drank sugar-sweetened beverages, compared to those who did not drink the beverage.

For the study, 93 men and women aged 40 to 69 years who had impaired glucose tolerance were subject to the 75-g oral glucose tolerance test and surveyed for their consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages.

During the follow-up, 21.5% of participants developed diabetes mellitus and those who were diagnosed with the disease were found much more likely to drink sugar-sweetened beverages.  Specifically, the risk in the beverage drinkers was increased by 226%, compared to that in non-drinkers.

Similarly, consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages were positively associated with the body mass index and HOMA-R values.  High intake of sugar sweetened beverages was linked to high body mass indices and high HOMA-R values. HOMA-R values indicate the severity of diabetes mellitus.
